BIM coordination and clash detection.

Every discipline in one federated model, with clash cycles run until conflicts are resolved on screen instead of on site. Delivered remotely by senior, managed teams.

The answer

BIM coordination, in one paragraph.

BIM coordination is the discipline of federating every discipline's model of a project — architecture, structure and MEP — into one navigable model, checking the models against each other, and resolving conflicts before construction. Clash detection is the automated check at its centre: software compares the geometry of every model and reports where elements collide or break clearance rules, so the team can decide who changes what.

ConstruBIM runs this as a managed service: we federate every discipline into one model and run clash cycles until conflicts are resolved on screen instead of on site.

Clash types

Hard, soft and workflow clashes.

  • Hard clash — two elements occupy the same space, for example a duct passing through a beam.
  • Soft clash — elements do not touch but break a required clearance, such as maintenance access or insulation space.
  • Workflow clash — a sequencing or information conflict, such as work modelled before its dependency is approved, or two teams working to different versions.

The rules for all three are set up front in the BIM Execution Plan, with the coordination cadence and the clash tolerance for each discipline pair. See BIM implementation for how the plan is built.

How we run it

From execution plan to a model that runs clean.

  • Plan. BIM Execution Plan, level-of-development matrix and common data environment set up against your standards.
  • Federate. Each discipline's model is assembled into one federated model, validated against the project's model validation checklists.
  • Test. Clash tests are run on the federated model against the rules in the BIM Execution Plan.
  • Resolve and report. Issues are tracked and closed in BCF, coordination meetings are held and reported, and the cycle repeats until the model runs clean.
  • Hand off. The federated model and its records go into the common data environment, governed to ISO 19650.

Proof

Coordination at the scale of an airport.

On the Mexico City International Airport (NAICM) the federated model was, at the time, the largest in the world, coordinating dozens of disciplines on a 743,000 m² terminal. ConstruBIM built a custom clash-detection clustering API that prioritised thousands of clashes by spatial concentration, so teams always resolved the densest conflicts first. Questions

Frequently asked questions

What is BIM coordination?

BIM coordination is the process of bringing the architectural, structural and MEP models of a project together into one federated model, checking them against each other, and resolving conflicts before construction starts.

What is clash detection in BIM?

Clash detection is the automated check inside BIM coordination. Software compares the geometry of every discipline model and reports where elements collide or break a clearance rule, so the team can decide which discipline changes what.

What types of clashes does ConstruBIM check?

Hard clashes (two elements occupy the same space), soft clashes (elements break a required clearance) and workflow clashes (sequencing or information conflicts). The rules for each are agreed in the BIM Execution Plan, together with the coordination cadence and clash tolerances.

Which software and formats do you use?

Navisworks and Revit for federation and review, BCF for issue tracking, and IFC where the project needs it. ConstruBIM works on the Autodesk stack (Revit, Autodesk Construction Cloud, Navisworks, Civil 3D) and also on Bentley ProjectWise, Trimble Connect, Aconex and Asite when the client's ecosystem requires it.

Do you work remotely, and in which markets?

Yes. Delivery is remote, by senior managed teams, for projects in the United States, Mexico, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Europe.

How is BIM coordination priced?

ConstruBIM prices on one global rate card, the same in every market. See the pricing and instant quote page for the current rates; a written quote follows within one business day.
